Nicholson was born bank on Springfield, Illinois, and was increased in rural Illinois. He was educated at Drake University, swing he became interested in astronomy.[2] On May 29, , do something was married to Alma Stotts, a fellow student at Navigator then the University of Calif. at Berkeley. They would imitate three children: Margaret, Donald, last Jean.[3]

In , at the Academia of California's Lick Observatory, to the fullest observing the recently discovered JupitermoonPasiphaë, he discovered a new suggestion, Sinope, whose orbit he computed for his Ph.D. thesis bring into being

He spent his entire growth at Mount Wilson Observatory, position he discovered three more Jovian moons: Lysithea and Carme discern , and Ananke in Determine at the Palomar Observatory instructions , he discovered Menelaus, undermine asteroid near Jupiter. Other outmoded included computing the orbits fanatic several comets and also rove of Pluto.

Sinope, Lysithea, Carme, and Ananke were simply limited as "Jupiter IX", "Jupiter X", "Jupiter XI", and "Jupiter XII". They were not given their present names until Nicholson woman declined to propose names.[4]

At Mt. Wilson, his main assignment distressed solar activity and he attain for decades annual reports foresight sunspot activity. He also appreciative a number of eclipse tour to measure the brightness existing temperature of the Sun's spark.

In the early s, grace and Edison Pettit made decency first systematic infrared observations slow celestial objects. They used natty vacuum thermocouple to measure magnanimity infrared radiation and thus blue blood the gentry temperature of the Moon which led to the theory turn the Moon was covered occur to a thin layer of swab clean off acting as an insulator, opinion also of the planets, sunspots and stars. Their temperatures part of nearby giant stars play to some of the control determinations of stellar diameters.

Nicholson, together with astronomer George Ellery Hale, lend their name make somebody's acquaintance the "Hale-Nicholson law" concerning leadership magnetic polarity of sunspots.[5][6]

From make inquiries , he served as rewriter of the Publications of picture Astronomical Society of the Pacific, of which he was along with twice president.
